The Ransom of Red Chief

This is a classic American short story by O. Henry. Note: My young great nephew, Johnny, (he prefers to be called John), and I teamed up to record this audio story. Any profits that might result will go to Johnny, hopefully to inspire him to pursue further creative efforts - like fishing videos.

One of my favorite short stories that just sounds wonderful!

This is an enchanting story that is performed so well by Jim Patton. The biggest surprise is John Oji, a young man who speaks the parts of Red Chief! How fun to have a boy speak the parts, and he did it so very well. The two kidnappers are completely overwhelmed by the youngster in the story. Jim is very skilled as a narrator and his accent here makes the story that much more fun to listen to. I highly recommend this story and his other works in audible.

This is a short story by O. Henry about two kidnappers, Bill and Sam, who take the son of a wealthy man in Alabama for ransom, only to be terrorized by the boy’s wild behavior and ultimately forced to pay the father to take him back.  The boy, Johnny Dorset, pretends to be a Native American chief named “Red Chief,” making the kidnapping a nightmare for the criminals, who find themselves in a classic ironic twist where the hostage is the one in control.

Into Modern Times with O. Henry

O. Henry might be considered the Saturday Night Live satirist of his day. While his messages are serious, quite often he doesn’t take himself or his characters too seriously. It’s almost like listening to comedy sketches from the 1910’s, and they are performed in that light.
